Book Corner: Fear and Loathing On The Campaign Trail ’72

“The main problem in any democracy is that crowd-pleasers are generally brainless swine who can go out on a stage & whup their supporters into an orgiastic frenzy—then go back to the office & sell every one of the poor bastards down the tube for a nickel apiece.”
Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72

“So much for Objective Journalism. Don’t bother to look for it here–not under any byline of mine; or anyone else I can think of. With the possible exception of things like box scores, race results, and stock market tabulations, there is no such thing as Objective Journalism. The phrase itself is a pompous contradiction in terms.”
Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72

Fear LoathingFear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72 is an entertaining and very different look at a presidential political campaign.  The book deals primarily with the democratic primary involving McGovern, Muskie, Humphrey and others, all seen through the prism of Thompson’s unique viewpoint.  Although unconventional the book still gives you a great look at the presidential campaign.  In many ways you get more of an unsanitized look at the inside of campaign workings than you do from those who are trying to move onto the next campaign.

You may be asking yourself what this has to do with real estate litigation or the work of a trial lawyer in Los Angeles.  Politics and law are similar in that we work on persuading people to follow us, either to vote through the ballot box or in the jury room.  I am very interested in the logistics of political campaigns as well.  I think there is a lot to learn about marketing your business, including your law firm.

Hunter S. Thompson may not be for everyone and he often digresses on tangents that are not always that interesting.  However, overall he does a good job of documenting life on the campaign trail.  I would recommend reading this book if you are interested in political campaigns and presidential politics.
